A dental implant is the next best thing to a natural tooth because it’s the only method capable of replacing both the root and the crown. With over a 95% success rate, dental implants can last for decades. Although they are the most reliable solution for tooth loss, here are 5 bad habits that can cause your new smile to fail.

1. GOING TO BED WITHOUT BRUSHING

Dental implants can’t get cavities, but you still need to brush your teeth. Food particles and plaque increase your risk of dental implant failure because they harbor bacteria. Your mouth is warm and moist, which is a perfect environment for bacteria.

Use a nonabrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth at least twice daily for 2 minutes.

2. NOT FLOSSING DAILY

Brushing alone won’t ensure your dental implants last for a lifetime. An infection called peri-implantitis, which is like gum disease, is a leading cause of failure. Flossing is the best way to prevent infections.

Floss your teeth and around your dental implants at least once per day. If you have difficulty using traditional floss, consider a waterflosser. Gentle water pressure is used to clean the most hard-to-reach areas in your mouth to keep your gums healthy.

3. SMOKING OR DRINKING ALCOHOL

Tobacco and alcohol affect your body’s ability to heal and fight infections, which can raise your risk of complications significantly. It’s best to moderate your alcohol consumption and stop smoking.

4. SKIPPING DENTAL CHECKUPS

In addition to caring for your smile at home, visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll remove any plaque and tartar buildup to keep your smile healthy. They will also examine your mouth to look for anything concerning, like gum inflammation. Quickly identifying potential issues can ensure your dental implants last for years.

5. GRINDING OR CLENCHING YOUR TEETH

Dental implants are durable, but they aren’t any match for the pressure and friction caused by grinding your teeth. If you suffer from bruxism, ask your dentist for a nightguard. It creates a cushion between your upper and lower teeth to absorb the friction. You will safeguard your investment and protect any natural teeth.

Dental implants are an excellent option to rebuild your smile. As the only solution to replicate the entire tooth structure, you’ll enjoy unmatched benefits not possible using any other procedure. With the right habits at home and regular dental care, you will never have to budget for replacements to enjoy lifelong results using a cost-effective method.
