Why Would a Tooth need to be removed?

The following are the most common reasons for extracting a tooth:
- Extensive Tooth Damage: We'll attempt to repair any tooth with deep decay, injury, or trauma using root canal therapy or other restorative dentistry procedures. If that's not possible, extraction may be our only option.
- Periodontal (Gum) Disease: As periodontal disease advances, it destroys the bone and tissues supporting the teeth, often resulting in bone loss and loose teeth. If a tooth loses its support and cannot be saved, we may need to remove it.
- Orthodontic Treatment: At times, having crooked teeth or a crowded mouth may necessitate selective extractions. That way, the mouth will have the needed space for the remaining teeth to shift into alignment.
- Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth often cause problems, including pain and infection, and frequently become trapped (impacted) in the gum tissue and jaw. Extracting wisdom teeth is one of the most commonly performed oral surgeries.
What Are the Types of tooth Extractions?
There are two types of tooth extraction procedures, and each will depend on your unique needs. A simple extraction is needed for a tooth that's accessible above the gum line. A surgical extraction, on the other hand, is a more involved procedure that's necessary when a tooth is weak, broken, or impacted.
How Can You Promote Healing After a tooth Extraction?
Make sure you follow the post-extraction instructions we provide. It's important to avoid spitting forcefully, drinking out of a straw, rinsing your mouth vigorously, brushing your teeth, or smoking for at least 24 hours after your tooth extraction. Otherwise, you may dislodge the blood clot forming in the socket, which can lead to a painful complication known as "dry socket."
If you feel pain in the extraction site, the medication we'll prescribe will help. Please don't hesitate to contact our dental office if you have questions or concerns.
